The wakeup call from the concierge comes at 4:45 am local time. Aurelia has an exciting conversation in Finnish with the taxi driver. While we wait at the airport Aurelia tells us about the last part of the Finnish crime novel by Arto Paasilinna she’s been reading. It gets light very early. We take the early flight to Copenhagen. The strong north-wind is ice cold and blows heavy clouds across the sky. When the sun rises it gives shining borders to the islands of the archipelago. Every island has a white line around it – maybe it is ice?

On Monday we will meet the Gruppe 77 and talk about our journey. We will exchange our last photos and discuss the next steps for our work.

In the meantime each one of us will collect and sort our impressions and insights and continue working on our individual projects.

Luise will travel to Turku again in June to continue talks with the responsible people for art and culture.

Along with our experiences during the journey, we will miss the daily reflections and discussions.

Weckruf durch den Portier um 4.45 Uhr Turkuzeit. Aurelia führt ein angeregtes Gespräch auf finnisch mit dem Taxichauffeur. Wir warten im Flughafen. Dabei erzählt Aurelia den letzten Teil ihres gelesenen finnischen Kriminalromanes von Arto Paasilinna. Es wird schon sehr früh hell. Wir nehmen den Frühflug nach Kopenhagen. Es weht eiskalter Nordwind, die Wolken jagen über den Himmel. Die Sonne geht auf und gibt den Inseln des Archipelago schimmernde Ränder. Every Island has a silver line – vielleicht ist es Eis?
Nach einer Zwischenlandung in Kopenhagen fliegen wir weiter nach Wien und werden von Mikey mit dem Auto abgeholt. Es ist in diesen zwei Wochen unserer Reise zu Hause Frühling geworden. Im Unterschied zu den eisigen Temperaturen von minus 5 Grad am Flughafen in Turku empfangen uns in Wien warme 17 Grad.

Am Montag werden wir unsere Gruppe 77 treffen und von unserer Reise berichten. Unsere letzten Fotos tauschen wir aus, weitere Nachbesprechungen als Beginn der kommenden Arbeitsschritte planen wir.

Inzwischen sammelt jede von uns die gewonnen Eindrücke und Erkenntnisse und arbeitet individuell an ihrem eigenen Projekt weiter.

Luise wird im Juni wieder nach Turku reisen und weitere Gespräche mit den Kulturverantwortlichen führen.

Die so komprimierte Form der gemeinsamen täglichen Reflexionen während der Reise werden wir abgesehen von den Reiseerlebnissen sehr vermissen.

Afterwards we took a walk through the forest and along the beach to the end of the headland. We were fascinated by the variety of stone shapes and colors. Peter, a geologist, explained how the rocks and the landscape were shaped during the ice age. Inge found a wonderful spot for the 5th part of her project “Erden” at the tip of the headland. There was a cold wind that gave us the feeling of nearby snow in spite of the sunshine.

Then Peter showed us around Turku’s exclusive residential area with the beautiful old wooden houses. We had a snack at the café-pavilion “Eckenäs“ and enjoyed looking at the colorful liverleafs coming out of the brown foliage.

We went to the city and met Mona to discuss our project. On the way to the museum we got distracted by the colorful market on the banks of the Aura river. This market happens only twice a year, when all kinds of regional products and artefacts are on display. Dark bread, buckthorn jam, dried forest berries, juices, mushrooms, pickles, smoked fish – our eyes couldn’t get enough.

With some delay we made it to the museum and visited some of the exquisite designer shops. Afterwards we had a nice good-bye dinner with our friends.

We are very grateful to the hospitality and support for our project to: Reino, Peter, Kim, Hannah, Nina, Antony, Mona, and Raine and Camilla from Helsinki.
Reino was extremely helpful throughout the entire week and provided the space in the Gallery Titanik for our presentation.

Anschließend spazierten wir durch den Wald und den Strand entlang bis zum Ende der Landspitze. Wir waren fasziniert von der Vielfalt der Steinformen und Farben, von dem eingeschlossenen Kalifeldspat im Granit. Peter als Geologe erklärte uns die eiszeitlichen Verformungen von Gestein und Landschaft.
An der Landspitze fand Inge einen wunderbaren Platz für den fünften Teil ihres „Erden“ Projektes. Es blies eiskalter Wind und trotz Sonnenschein hatten wir das Gefühl von nahem Schnee.

Peter zeigte uns auch noch das Villenviertel, wunderbare farbige alte Holzhäuser und im kleinen Cafepavillon „Eckenäs“ durften wir preisgünstig die Saison eröffnen. Farbenkräftige Leberblümchen durchbrachen das fahle Braun des alten Laubs.

Danach trafen wir Mona in der Stadt und besprachen unser Projekt. Wir wollten gleich anschließend ins Museum gehen, wurden aber von buntem Markttreiben am Ufer der Aura angelockt. Dieser Markt findet zwei Mal jährlich statt und es werden regionale Produkte und Kunsthandwerk angeboten. Dunkle Brote, Sanddornmarmeladen, alle Arten von pulverisierten Waldbeeren, Säfte, Pilze, Eingelegtes, geräucherte Fische – wir konnten uns nicht sattsehen.

Der Museumsbesuch konnte trotzdem stattfinden und ein paar letzte Blicke in die verlockenden Designerläden gingen sich auch noch aus.

Ein schönes Abendessen mit unseren Freunden aus Turku war zugleich unser Abschied.

Wir bedanken uns für die wunderbare Gastfreundschaft und Unterstützung unseres Projektes in Turku: Reino, Peter, Kim, Hannah, Nina, Antony, Mona, sowie Raine und Camilla in Helsinki.
Reino war uns in der ganzen Woche sehr behilflich, verschiedene Termine wahrzunehmen und hat uns die Galerie Titanik für die Präsentation zur Verfügung gestellt.

Hanna Varis, a local artist, picks us up in her uncle’s car and shows us around her 2 studios and her exhibition project at the castle of Turku. The Albertina in Vienna bought some of her graphics. She talks a lot about her life and how she manages as an artist.

Today we also meet a representative of the city’s cultural office to talk about our project for 2011. She welcomes us benevolently and we have a productive conversation.

After that we go to the Gallery Titanik for a presentation of our travel art project. Luise and Erika set up the projector and the screen, Aurelia stages her project “Reaching Suomi” and Inge installs her work from the project “Erden”. We make the presentation using videos, photos and travel reports. The audience shows a very encouraging interest in our work. We welcome a very special guest, Heli Kanerva, the deputy director of the Political Department for Security Policy and Crisis Management from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. She arrives with her husband and both listen to the presentation with a lot of curiosity. She herself is a frequent traveler.

Luise points out the present situation of artist and arranges the presentation in the form of a performance.

After a lot of positive feedback we go to the Bremer, a local student’s pub, where we continue our interesting conversations with Reino, Peter, Antony, Hannah and other artists.

Hannah offers her car to us for tomorrow, when we are planning to go to one of the islands to get an impression of the archipelagos. There are no boats yet because of the ice.

Hanna Varis, eine in Turku ansässige Künstlerin, holt uns mit dem Auto ihres Onkels ab und zeigt uns ihre beiden Ateliers sowie auch ihr neues Ausstellungsprojekt in der Burg von Turku. Einige ihrer Grafiken wurden von der Albertina in Wien angekauft. Sie erzählt viel aus ihrem Leben und wie sie ihr künstlerisches Leben meistert.

Wir treffen an diesem Tag noch eine Vertreterin des Kulturamtes der Stadt, um über unser Projekt für 2011 zu sprechen. Wir wurden sehr wohlwollend im Gespräch empfangen.

Anschließend gehen wir in die Galerie Titanik, um unser Reisekunstprojekt zu präsentieren. Luise und Erika machen die Aufbauarbeiten für die Projektionen, Aurelia inszeniert ihr Projekt „Reaching Suomi“ und Inge installiert ihre Arbeiten zum Projekt „Erden“. Mittels Video, Fotos und Reiseberichten gestalten wir die Präsentation. Das Publikum zeigt ein für uns sehr positives Interesse. Wir erhalten hohen Besuch von Heli Kanerva. Sie ist Deputy Director für das Political Department for Security Policy and Crisis Management im finnischen Außenministerium. Sie kommt mir Ihrem Ehemann und beide sind aufmerksame Zuhörer unserer Präsentation. Ist Heli doch selbst viel auf Reisen.

Luise hat auf die aktuelle Situation der Künstler hingewiesen und die Präsentation als Performance gestaltet.
Nach den vielen positiven Rückmeldungen gehen wir noch ins Bremer, ein Studentenlokal, wo wir die interessanten Gespräche mit Reino, Peter, Antony, Hannah und anderen Künstlern weiterführen.

Für den kommenden Tag leiht uns Hannah ihr Auto und Peter wird uns auf eine der Inseln chauffieren, damit wir einen Eindruck des Archipelagos bekommen. Wegen dem Eis fahren noch keine Boote.

On the way to the university one can see the developments of the Abo Academy. Old faculty buildings are more and more enhanced by new architecture. In the lobby of the educational centre is the “Baltic Table” by Michelangelo Pistoletto, which was created in connection with NUROPE, the nomadic university. Kim, Peter and Reino waited for us in a large and well equipped meeting room. The general impression was: well-structured, bright and friendly, good art in the rooms create an inspiring atmosphere.

Afterwards we visited Turku’s cathedral, St. Henrik, a national monument and the seat of the Protestant-Lutheran church of Finland. The cathedral is 700 years old, has always been the seat of the bishop, and is the most important and precious monument of the country.

After the quiet holidays we could feel a pulsation throughout the city. What impressed us most today was the evening light. Just after the rain stopped, a wall of light starting from the horizon stretched over the city and illuminated everything with a golden hue. In an instant the light changed the atmosphere of the city.

The next day started with a visit to the library. Everybody in the city appreciates this place for culture very well. Reino takes out some historic documents about the happenings during the Second World War to show them to Aurelia and Inge.

Afterwards we went downriver to the academy. The ships on the canal were still in hibernation. The season for ship restaurants starts only in early May.
In the academy, an old shipyard, the director and one professor welcomed us. We were shown around all the ateliers and got a good insight into the way art is taught here – with strong roots in the traditional techniques. The classrooms are very large and architecturally interesting. Along with fine art, there is the university for music, the conservatory, a theatre and a dancing school. The large music theatre and an adjoining restaurant in the erstwhile shipyard give a very generous impression. The whole academy, situated in a small city of 160.000, appears to be very innovative, exemplary and generous, and gives art and education the position they deserve.

Auf dem Weg zur Universität kann man die Entwicklung der Abo Akademie anhand der Gebäude ablesen. Alte ehemalige Fakultätshäuser werden zunehmend von der neuen Architektur ergänzt. Im Zentrum für Weiterbildung steht im Foyer der „Baltic Table“ von Michelangelo Pistoletto, der im Zusammenhang mit der Nomadischen Universität (NUROPE) kreiert wurde.
Kim, Peter und Reino erwarten uns in einem großzügigen, technisch gut ausgestatteten Besprechungsraum. Der allgemeine Eindruck ist: klar strukturiert, hell und freundlich, gute Kunst in den Räumen erzeugen eine inspirierende Atmosphäre.

Anschließend besuchen wir die Kathedrale von Turku, St. Henrik, das Nationalheiligtum und Hauptsitz der evangelisch-lutherischen Kirche in Finnland. Die Kirche ist 700 Jahre alt und war immer Bischofssitz und ist das wertvollste baugeschichtliche Denkmal des Landes.

Nach den ruhigen Feiertagen war das Pulsieren der Stadt wieder spürbar.
An diesem Tag begeistert uns vor allem das abendliche Licht. Hat es zuvor noch geregnet, schob sich eine Lichtwand vom Horizont über die Stadt und vergoldete alles. Dieses Licht veränderte augenblicklich den Charakter der Stadt.

Der nächste Tag begann mit einem Besuch der Bibliothek. Es ist ein Kulturort für alle Menschen der Stadt und wird sehr gut angenommen. Reino bringt für Aurelia und Inge einige historische finnische Dokumentationen über die Ereignisse des 2. Weltkrieges.

Anschließend führt unser Weg die Aura Richtung Meer bis zur Akademie entlang. Die Schiffe am Kanal sind noch im Winterschlaf. Erst Anfang Mai beginnt hier die Saison und die Bootsrestaurants öffnen.
In der Akademie, eine ehemalige Seilerei und Werft erwarten uns die Direktorin und eine Professorin. Wir werden durch alle Ateliers geführt, bekommen Einblick in den kunstpädagogischen Betrieb und stellen fest, dass die traditionellen Kulturtechniken eine Grundlage der Ausbildung sind. Die Räume sind sehr großzügig und architektonisch interessant genutzt. Auch die Musikuniversität und Konservatorium sowie Theater und Tanz finden hier Platz. Ein wunderbares Musiktheater im hohen Gebäude der ehemaligen Werft mit einem dazugehörigen Restaurant lässt an Großzügigkeit nichts vermissen. Die gesamte Anlage der Akademie ist für eine Stadt mit 160.000 Einwohnern für uns aus Graz ein unvorstellbar innovatives, vorbildliches und großzügiges Unternehmen und gibt damit den Künsten und der Bildung den Stellenwert, der ihnen gebührt.

We have a long talk about our future cooperation with the Gallery Titanik and our plans in connection with cultural capital Turku 2011.
As in most places, artist in Turku have to struggle to finance their art and their international contacts.

Yesterday, on Easter Monday, we went to a beautiful choir concert by Rachmaninov. The Key Ensemble sang the Easter Vesper. The fantastic performance in Russian language was enhanced by the acoustics in a Russian-Orthodox church. We sat in the Easter-atmosphere below the stars of the dome and thought of Gala Placidia in Ravenna.

Today started with more organizational talks and with unpacking of Aurelia’s work. Her silk pieces, our catalogues and posters, and Inge’s work were shipped here by mail.

After this we will meet Kim, Peter and Reino for further talks at the Abo Academy, the Swedish University in Turku.
